Why is Mooney in D-IV? This might be the best team the state has ever seen and certainly one of the best teams ever in the valley. They play a mostly D-I schedule. Recruit from other D-I schools and yet the state division ranking system is flawed. Would you rather see them playing Mentors or Coldwater in the state playoffs? Cmon OHSAA, redo the stupid division rankings!!!

I was a Mooney detractor and felt they would get rocked in this game. However, I must say I am very impressed. These kids really took it to one of the better teams in the state.

Also, I like that Mentor lost. They play in the same division as my alma mater Strongsville, who absolutely DESTROYED Saint Eds 39-0 last night. I wish Mooney would move up and play in the new D1 Northeast Ohio Conference and play the likes of Mentor, Solon, Euclid, Brunswick, and Strongsville, plus others, every year. The better the competition, the better the games.

Once again, kudos and congrats to Mooney. I now believe Mooney is worth all of the hype they get. Please destroy Ursuline this year!!!

There was well deserved hype. They recruited the best player Poland ever had in Beachum, the best player Canfield ever had in Zordich, McCarthy is a Poland kid. I think the kid going to Oklahoma is from Youngstown. Half the rest of the team is from Boardman. This might be the best all star team ever assembled in this area. They are really a D-I team competing against mostly D-I teams during the regular season and then facing inferior competition come playoff time. They'll win that D-IV playoffs easily. Not one playoff game will they even break a sweat.

Rumor is Ursuline actually rejected boys who wanted to transfer there so that they'd drop to D-V and not have to face Mooney in the playoffs. This way they'll easily make the playoffs and still have a chance to win the state title in D-V. Had they stayed in D-IV, they'd have to go through Mooney and they have zero chance of beating Mooney.

Mooney won't get challenged all year and will go undefeated. The only way they get beat is if they turn it over half a dozen times in a game.

The only question I have is who are they going to recruit for next year? Who are the talented underclassmen in Boardman, Poland, Canfield, and Youngstown who might all of a sudden get religion?

I wish Mooney would come play in the Northeast Ohio Conference....

Strongsville could sure use some more competition. Checkout the video!

To be honest, the mooney team should be called the mahoning valley all-stars...look at their roster they have kids waiting in the wings how many have gone to parochial schhols before enrolling at mooney....how many kids are on the team? its a mockery to high school sports that they are a D-4 school......at least 7-8 underclassman 260 and over.

any bozo could coach rhat to a D-4 championship... high school football in ohio is a joke with the transfer rules and open enrollment...it has ruined high school football

You are absolutely correct. The Catholics have always cheated and now with open enrollment, they can all cheat. High School football is not much different from college recruiting nowadays all started by the parochial schools years ago. Academics is second to sports especially football. It has definitely ruined football.

The Steel Valley conference was once the best conference around and the cheating of Ursuline (cheery picking Fitch's talent) and Mooney (cherry picking Boardman's) was a primary reason for the decline and eventual breaking up of the conference.

Yet, there will be Mooney people replying who think it's completely fair that they can recruit or they'll claim "prove it". It's one of those wink and nod types of activities and very difficult to prove but we all know it occurs.

The kids I feel sorry for are the REAL D-IV players who think they have a chance to win a state title only to face what should be a D-I team in the playoffs. It truly is a sham and the Catholics should be ashamed.

The whining on these posts really got me laughing. Boardman is always complaining about Mooney's "recruiting", but the stars "No-Hype" names are mostly from other districts. Now little tiny Ursuline is going to be blamed for the lack of success Austintown has with the thousand kids who are left. Since a limited amount of students can participate in football, you would think they could consider it an opportunity for more kids to participate.

Meanwhile, Austintown never minds having a good athlete from Youngstown on the team who "moves" into Austintown. LOL

Then posters try to imply that kids with names like "McCarthy, Marlowe, and Simon" aren't Catholic. Who recruited these kids? Could it be THEIR PARENTS? Obviously the posters aren't familiar with the Mooney/Ursuline alumni lists.

Congratulations to Canfield and Poland who field good teams without whining and obsessing. Maybe though,Poland should think about admitting a few more Black players so that Beachum didn't have to be alone out there.

A future star basketball player at Poland will be transferring to Ursuline this year. Poland had a chance to be state champs this year with him. Ursuline had two good players last year who grew up in Campbell.

you are correct about alumni...can anyone tell me when any other Beachums went to mooney?

or what about the Campbell QB that tranferred in...i think he went to a big ten school...i think he was an alumni?...who paid his tuition...when he went there?...

Mooney its fine that you want to recruit...but change the rules and go D-1....you are making a joke of the playoff system...i guess if you think that beating up on legit D-4 schools is right makes me think that you would lying, cheating and stealing is a good thing.
