its simple. dogs are not people and people are sometimes irresponsible. so rules have to be made. unfortunately, the obedient people and dogs suffer discrimination. that's true with all laws. if people want to run their dogs without restriction they need to go somewhere away from where people frequent. its more important people have access to recreational facilities than animals. why don't people create a dog park just for dogs?

I find this decision to be very like those who buy a house next to an airport, then b*tch about the noise. Poland Woods has always had the policy of letting dogs simply be "Under Control" of their owner - it says so on the sign off the College St. entrance, for those who have never been there but will no doubt have an opinion on the matter. If the dog is well behaved, no problem. If it's not, then you have an issue with the owner. Why take the chickens##t way of punishing the dogs and owners who ARE responsible, unless it's that people are afraid to actually interact with another human being?

It's yet another case of "I don't like it, so you can't do it."

Closedshop you are absolutely wrong.

How is one to know that your loose dog is "under control" or a menace until it bites him/her on the arse? I, for one, do not feel I should have to attempt a discussion with you about chaining your dog while fleeing the mangy mutt you allow to run loose. Public parks are just that PUBLIC and meant to be enjoyed by the public at large. This means you can certainly enjoy the park with your animal, but put a leash on that beast so I can enjoy the same park without having to be bothered with you and "Fido."

well put, brothalove.

dog owners don't get it that the rest of us don't appreciate the jolt of adrenaline that hits you when a strange dog runs at you, even if it doesn't bite you.

BrothaLove, how is one to know that the next person they encounter on the street won't whip out a gun and shoot them? Is it reasonable to expect everyone to clear the streets because I (or you) want to walk down the sidewalk?

The great majority of people are law-abiding, and follow the rules. That's the only way society functions. So when the rules say your dog must be under control, it's reasonable to expect that a dog encountered where that rule applies IS under control. If you care to actually read the story, you'll note that someone said she knew of ONE encounter with an undisciplined dog, and that dog's owner is no longer permitted in Poland Woods. Sounds like the system works, without punishing everyone for the actions of a few.

Closedshop you cannot be serious with that analogy.

It is illegal for someone to whip out a gun and begin shooting people, yes, but people are held to a higher standard of reasoning than a dog or other household pet. If a person shoots another it is a given that this person understood the laws of society and chose to ignore said laws. We do not know why a dog that is normally calm will choose to attack a person. We cannot say that the dog understands what is posted at the entrance to the park and often the animal reacts to quickly for the owner to stop it.

To avoid all that it is not asking too much for you to keep your mangy dog on a leash.

You are right it is not reasonable to want everyone to clear the streets so I can use the sidewalk, but it is reasonable to expect a certain level security while I use the streets and that security is compromised when a loose dog, that by nature of it being an animal is unpredictable, is running around loose.

You want your dog to run loose then by a fence or one of those collars that keeps the animal on your property, but don't compromise my right to use public areas. The last time I checked I pay taxes your dog doesn't.

Sounds like the system works to me, too. I know of more dogs that I'd rather be around than most kids whose parents obviously aren't in control of them! And, I don't appreciate it when I'm shopping, dining, or anywhere in public where some kid is screaming or crying or throwing a tantrum. That's what gets MY adrenaline up.

You're right about that! Once I get over that "jolt of adrenaline" I give the offending mutt-mutt a jolt of electricity from my 300,000 volt stun gun!
