Why in the world are they moving a library to that spot? I don't even like driving by that intersection. Then again, the whole South side has become a dump, so there isn't a better place. The current location is the best spot, really.

That building used to be an A & P. That's where I had my first job -- as a cashier. I was 16 and not one bit afraid to be there. Now look at it . . .

My aunt use to be the head cashier at that A&P. Betty. Do you remember her?

Plenty of people would use the library, just not in that spot. No store has been able to stay open there for long and I doubt the library will either. It's near all those bad East 'Dale streets and other bad neighborhoods. This is just a cheap shot by the library board. They should have razed the current library building and built a new facility right there. But they always find a way to go the cheap route for the city residents. Which is why I vote their levies down. Each and every time.

Sorry, no. I don't remember a soul except that I got my first lesson in food stamps there, all those years ago. I also remember that I made more than any of my friends (something like $2.07/hour) because I was in a union. I had to pass a math test to get the job, and they used to have secret shoppers come in and check that the cashiers rang items up on the right departments. That's where the food stamps came in. No taxable items. No cigarettes. No pop.

I had to make change, count my drawer, and clean the belt and around the register when I wasn't busy. Also, I had to fill the cigarette slots and generally straighten up the area. We weren't allowed to stand around and do nothing.

...especially when the stray bullets come through the windows from teh drive-bys. Won't that be fun, watching books jump off the shelves...smiling smiley

Yes, keep trying to be positive, this area can only be turned around by offering new ideas and hope. How many young black children will now have the opportunity to learn and get excited about books and the journey they can take you. I hope that positive folks will get behind this, volunteer to help there. As for the negative Nelly's, keep trying to keep the area back by your racist, backward thinking.

Everybody complains that nothing positive is happening in Youngstown and when something does - the complaining gets even louder....bravo.
