The passing of the great (and if you don't think he was great I suggest you read his "biography" "Just Call Me Minnie : My Six Decades In Baseball") Minnie Minoso had me putting on my Reminiscing Hat. It's actually my Lester Young hat but it has multiple uses. I recalled playing college ball with a 3rd baseman named Danny Clifton from Chicago who went by the nickname of "Minnie". The best all-around player on the team. Had an arm like a bazooka and hit with power. I heard that the pros scouted him but he had other plans. Last I heard he was a name partner in a big law firm in his home town. But I digress. Thinking of the real Minnie got me thinking of the great names of pro athletes. Not necessarily (yet often) great players, just great names. Names that just SOUND good to the ear. No nicknames.
Rocky Colavito (maybe his roomie Herb Score too.)
Billy Sunday (he was actually a minister)
There are plenty more but these are my favorites I tellya what.
